NEW LONDON, Conn. – Sophomores Brooklynn Hayes (Granville, Mass.) and Stephania Lopez (Chicago, Ill.) combined to score 11 goals in leading the Connecticut College women's water polo team to a 13-9 win over Penn State Behrend in the seventh-place game of the CWPA Division III Championships on Sunday morning.
Hayes, who earned Player of the Game accolades, sparked the Camels by scoring the first two goals of the game in the opening four minutes. Lopez added a pair of markers, and the hosts held a 4-1 lead through one quarter of play.
Penn State Behrend then caught fire in the second, netting four unanswered to take a 5-4 advantage with 2:49 on the clock. The Camels, however, struck back by getting three consecutive goals from Lopez as well as juniors Ginny McCool (Delray Beach, Fla.) and Hannah Rogers (Kingston, Pa.) to regain the lead which they never surrendered again.
In addition to finding the back of the net five times, Hayes also tallied an assist and two steals to help the Camels end the spring on a high note. Lopez contributed six goals, two assists, two steals and one field block, while freshman Marissa Moreno (San Diego, Calif.) provided a team-high five steals along with two assists.
Connecticut College (9-10) loses just one player to graduation and is expected to return eight letterwinners next season.
