Women’s Water Polo Comes Up Just Short Against Brown

Ginny McCool

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Connecticut College women's water polo team fell to Brown by a 9-6 score at the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center on Sunday afternoon.

After a slow start, Connecticut College stormed back and took a 5-4 lead when freshman Stephania Lopez (Chicago, Ill.) found the back of the net at the 6:28 mark of the second quarter. The goal capped a streak of four unanswered, which included three tallies coming from the star freshman, to help the team rally from an earlier 4-1 deficit.

Brown, however, recovered, and ended the game on a 5-1 run. Kaitlyn Cook scored with 2:02 remaining in the third to put the Bears back ahead for good, and Carissa Perez added back-to-back insurance markers to help the hosts register their 13th win of the season.

Lopez led Connecticut College by scoring five of the team's goals. Classmate Sabrina Afshinnekoo (New York, N.Y.) was equally as impressive on the defensive end by turning away eight shots from between the posts.

Connecticut College (6-7) will next trek to Erie, Pa. to compete at the CWPA Division III Championships. The postseason event begins on Saturday, Apr. 14.
