WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – Freshman Ben Vazquez (Millington, N.J.) recorded a top-eight finish in the 800-meter run and classmate Billy Fleurima (Bronx, N.Y.) anchored a record-breaking relay to lead the Connecticut College men's track & field team on the final day of competition at the New England Division III Championships on Saturday afternoon.
Vazquez accounted for the scoring by finishing sixth in the 800-meter run. He navigated the track in 1:54.30, which was the second-fastest time in program history, and earned All-New England accolades for his efforts.
Earlier in the day the 4x100-meter relay finished 11th by navigating the track in a school-record time of 43:06 seconds. Jake Beloin (Cheshire, Conn.), Ian Anderson (Chicago, Ill.), Ian McAleer (Newfields, N.H.) and Fleurima crushed their season-best mark of 44.09 entering the meet as a group, which they punched in last weekend at the NESCAC Championships, and easily surpassed the previous program standard of 43.44 that was established in 2012.
Select members of the Connecticut College men's track & field team will head to Southern Connecticut State to compete at the New England Championships against schools from all three NCAA divisions next weekend.
