LEWISTON, Maine – Senior captain Ben Manoogian (Peabody, Mass.) netted a go-ahead goal and sophomore AJ Marcucci (West Chester, Pa.) recorded his seventh straight clean sheet between the pipes to propel the No. 11 Connecticut College men's soccer team to a 2-0 triumph over Bates at Russell Street Field on Saturday afternoon.
With the win, the Camels ended the day alone in first place in the NESCAC standings. No. 3 Tufts, meanwhile, dropped to second after playing Middlebury to a 1-1 tie in Vermont earlier in the day.
After a scoreless first half which saw the Camels outshoot the Bobcats by a 6-1 margin, Manoogian provided all of the scoring his team would need when he finished a pass from senior classmate Christian Murphy (Newport News, Va.) in the 76th minute. With time winding down, sophomore Liam Noonan (Calabasas, Calif.) then added insurance by potting his fifth goal of the season to put the match out of reach.
Marcucci picked up another shutout win by only having to make two saves for Connecticut College, which was outshot by an 11-10 margin and held a 7-1 advantage in corner kick opportunities. Robbie Montanaro of Bates (6-4, NESCAC 3-4) made one save in the loss.
Connecticut College (10-0, NESCAC 6-0) next hosts perennial power Amherst on Tuesday afternoon at 4 p.m.
