No. 11 Men's Soccer Blanks Eastern Connecticut State, 2-0, in Lightning-Shortened Match

AJ Marcucci
WILLIMANTIC, Conn. - Sophomore AJ Marcucci (West Chester, Pa.) made three saves to record his seventh shutout of the season as the No. 11 Connecticut College men's soccer team blanked Eastern Connecticut State by a 2-0 score on Tuesday afternoon at Thomas Nevers Field.

Senior Christian Murphy (Newport News, Va.) set up both goals for the Camels to notch his sixth and seventh helpers of the season. Ben Manoogian (Peabody, Mass.), a senior captain, first headed in a corner kick in the 10th minute to give the Camels a 1-0 lead headed into the break.

Eastern Connecticut State (8-2) had its best opportunity to get on the board in the opening stages of the second half when Justin Jensen hit the crossbar. The Camels, meanwhile, continued to pressure in their offensive third and got golden opportunities from junior Manny Balbontin (New York, N.Y.), who had a point-blank attempt stopped, as well as a shot by Murphy which bounced off the post.

Sophomore Liam Noonan (Calabasas, Calif.), who netted the game-winning marker in Saturday's triumph over Williams, was eventually able to extend the Camel lead when he found the back of the net at the 79:11 mark of the contest. The match was then stopped and called with 10:49 remaining in regulation due to lightning.

Marcucci turned away three shots to pick up the shutout for Connecticut College, which has not surrendered a goal in more than 500 straight minutes of action. Ryan Murphy was charged with the loss after only making one save in the opening half.

Connecticut College (9-0), which jumped up eight spots in the latest United Soccer Coaches National Poll earlier in the day, next visits Bates on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m.
