GENEVA, N.Y. --First year forward Lauren Helm (Frisco, Texas) scored twice and classmate Kyla Floresca (West Memphis, Ark.) had a goal and an assist to lead the eighth ranked Connecticut College women's hockey team to a 5-1 victory against William Smith College in front of 117 fans in the Freezer on New Year's night.
The Camels improved their record to 6-2 with the triumph while the Herons fell to 3-7-1 with the setback.
Senior Ashley Anctil (Manchester, N.H.) and Erin Healy (Melrose, Mass.) chipped in with goals for the Camels. Senior defender Julia Beattie (Livonia, Mich.) dished out three assists in the victory. Senior Cassie Hunter (Gilford, N.H.), Paige Michel (Essex, Conn.) and Kylie Wilkes (Howell, N.J.) all contributed with assists for the victors.
Senior Katherine Chester (Mendham, N.J.) made 26 saves in goal for the Camels. Dylann Nsar (Reston, Va.) stopped four shots in 9:35 of relief duty.
The Camels enjoyed a 46-31 advantage on the shot chart. Connecticut College continued to excel on its specialty teams, finishing a perfect 6-for-6 on its penalty kill while executing on three of its seven scoring opportunities with the extra skater.
Junior forward Kiley Fewster (Fort Meyers, Fla.) put in a shorthanded marker in the first period for William Smith College to account for their offense. Junior net-minder Maggie Salmon (Medford, Mass.) turned aside 41 Camel shots in the setback.
The Camels and Herons will conclude their two-game series tomorrow with a 3:00 p.m. game in the Empire State.
