BEVERLY, Mass. – Sophomore Manny Balbontin (New York, N.Y.) scored twice in the first half to help lead the Connecticut College men's soccer team to a 2-0 non-conference victory over Endicott on Friday evening at Hempstead Stadium.
Balbontin scored twice in less than four minutes during the stretch run of the first half. After finishing a pass from freshman Justin Miranda (Winchester, Mass.) to put the Camels on the board in the 41st minute, the sophomore struck again when he took another feed from his same teammate and beat goalkeeper Will Manuel on a breakaway opportunity with just 17 seconds remaining on the clock.
Each team had its opportunities to score early in the second frame. After junior Ben Manoogian (Peabody, Mass.) nearly scored when he headed a shot wide resulting in a corner kick, the Gulls cleared the ball and had its best chance of the match to score less than a minute later. Evan Couchot took a long pass and tried to head the ball past Camel freshman goalkeeper A.J. Marcucci (West Chester, Pa.), but his attempt sailed over the crossbar. Marcucci made two more stops over the last 45 minutes, and the Camels held on to record their seventh shutout of the season.
Marcucci turned away three shots to pick up another victory for Connecticut College, which was outshot by a 10-8 margin and had a 3-2 edge in corner kick opportunities. Manuel of Endicott (7-3-3) suffered the defeat by making just one save.
Connecticut College (9-1-3) resumes NESCAC play when it hosts Bowdoin on Saturday, Oct. 21 at 2:00 p.m. Seniors Brooks Clark (Boxford, Mass.) Graham Koval (Crested Butte, Colo.) and Nate Summers (Westfield, Mass.) will be recognized for their contributions to the program prior to the contest.
