NEW LONDON, Conn. – Freshman Caroline Ferro (Wilton, Conn.) and junior Jamie Navoni (Northboro, Mass.) each scored a goal in the first half to help lead the Connecticut College field hockey team to a 2-0 victory over Smith on Wednesday evening at Silfen Field.
The Camels got all the offense they needed in a span of 1:27 to earn its first victory of the season. Ferro opened the scoring when she beat goalkeeper Cameo Tietje on a breakaway opportunity in the 29th minute, and Navoni doubled the lead shortly afterwards when she collected a rebound amongst a pile of players from both sides and shot the ball to the back of the cage.
Freshman Andi McGraw (Sheffield, Mass.) picked up her first collegiate victory by making one save between the pipes for Connecticut College, which outshot its opponent by a 9-4 margin. Anchored by junior Lauren Hirshom (Walpole, Mass.), the defense did not allow the Pioneers to attempt a shot in the first half and successfully cleared away five penalty corner opportunities by the visitors in the second frame. Tietje of Smith (1-3) turned away three shots in the losing effort.
Connecticut College (1-2) will face its third nationally-ranked opponent this season when it visits #2 Tufts on Saturday, Sept. 16 at noon.
